Colloquially known as “mother”, MU/TH/UR is the AI mainframe that powers the crewed vessels in the film franchise Alien. This decision-making supercomputer is thought to possess a great sense of morality but, in time, ends up sabotaging the crew, leading to their demise. This ironic plot twist is emblematic of present-day society’s dependence on information systems. This pursuit of perfection, which might blur the speculative lens of when science fiction becomes a reality, is truly symbolic of the carnivorous greed of modern civilization. The work in this exhibition seeks to identify how material culture practices place value on the technological rituals of this age in time.
